Tuesday, 18 May 2010
Foam Magazine would like to thank everyone who submitted and wishes the editorial team good luck selecting the Talents of 2010.
The winners will have their portfolios published in the September's #24/Talent issue of Foam Magazine, accompanied with an interview.
The last days towards the closing date were crazy, many extra hours were spent to cope with the many submissions we received. In total we received over 950 complete submissions from 50 different countries - soon we will find out if the quality is as impressive as the quantity.
We will keep you up to date in the process.
PAST WINNERS GIVE THEIR TIPS
Sunday, 14 April 2010
Winners of last year's Talent Call, whose portfolios were featured in the #20/Talent issue, give their tips to young photographers out there who want to submit their work to the Talent Call this year.
Simone Bergatini says young photographers must "believe everyday that their work can still improve."
Daniel Naudé advises "to first present a fairly complete body of work to trusted eyes and maybe make slight changes according to their suggestions. However, it is the photographer who makes the final selection, and submits it proudly."
Elliott Wilcox makes a similar point: "The best advice I could give is to submit a coherent and consistent body of work that ultimately you are happy with. If a few images are weaker you might want to think about not including them, if this hinders the rest of the project."
Finally, Ronald Leong sums it up: "If the work is finished and you have poured a significant part of your life into creating it, just submit them!"
The Talent Call is open for submissions until May 1st - only 2 more weeks to go!

Overwhelmed..

We must say, we were overwhelmed by the impressive amount and quality of the submissions! With over 900 submissions from more then 50 different countries (look up at the talent chart to see which ones and you will be suprised!) we may call it big success.
Our editorial team is now taking their time to make sure they will go over each submission, to make another beautiful selection for in the, as always inspiring, Talent issue which will come out in September.
By the beginning of July we hope to be able to announce the first names who will get a portfolio published in Foam Magazine #20 / Talent.

Monday, 11 May 2009
We are proud to announce the first photographer who will have a portfolio in the upcoming 'Talent' issue which is Leonie Purchas, winner of the KLM Paul Huf Award 2009
The photographs of Leonie Purchas are visually and emotionally compelling. Working within the confined and complicated space of her family's home she shows us moments that are familiar and everyday, yet reveal something we don't know -the poetic of the ordinary. To see her website click here.

Mini-interview with Ahmet Unver - one of the winners of the 'Talent' issue #16
Sunday, 03 April 2009
Did you get many reactions on your portfolio in issue #
16?
Yes, I received a lot of positive responses on the feature in Foam Magazine.
Did your participation in the Talent issue help you professionally, e.g
in promoting your work?
It did help,I have been approached by 'Scan', a photography festival in Spain, where I will be exhibiting my work. 'Mapamundistas' is another Spanish art festival whom I will be working with later this year. We're going to do a 'Europe Tour'.
It also helps a lot when meeting galleries and clients to be able to show that I have had work published in Foam magazine.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a project based in and about turkey. I'm trying to understand and capture the many facets of the Turkish society and culture, which is a very complex thing based on its old Ottoman history. The modern secular turkish republic and religions rise, which all seem to be clashing with each other in daily life.
Get Inspired!

Mini interview with Wayne Liu - one of the winners of the 'Talent' issue #16
Sunday, 19 March 2009
Did you get a lot of response on your published portfolio in issue # 16 Talent? Did your participation in the Talent issue help you professionally, e.g in promoting your work?
Yes, an Amsterdam gallery had contacted me after the publication, but most of all, it has been an affirmation of my works, in general, and in particular the China series,as I was shooting there during the preparation for the Talent issue.
What are you working on now?
Now I am editing the new series from China, and looking back on the previous shoot and edit,
to make certain changes, conceptually perhaps- as I am still editing. I was inspired partly by a friend who collects tossed objects from the street. I will go back to China to shoot further, and also to Taiwan to confront the ghosts of my adolescent years. Also somewhere in Eastern Europe, which in relation to China, presents a different aspect of post-Communist History.
